Septic System FAQ's

Almost all local and state governments, as well as septic professionals, recommend having your septic tank pumped once it is 25-35% full of sludge and scum or about every 3-5 years.

Pumping your septic tank on a regular basis is critical for the life of your septic system – particularly your disposal (leach) fields. If you’re not pumping your tank enough, solids can make their way into the disposal fields. If solids are going into the disposal fields, they can become plugged which can cause them to fail. Additionally, if the tank has not been pumped, it can cause blockages which can result in sewage backing up into your home.

If you don’t have risers at surface level, the tech who pumps your tank will likely have to dig to gain access to the service openings. It’s important to know that inaccessibility is often a code compliance issue but also an added cost that you’ll likely incur every time the tank is pumped. It is highly recommended that you have risers with lids installed at surface level for code compliance (if applicable) and cost savings.

You can always refer to the original design or permit of your system for the capacity of your tank. However, sometimes that can be inaccurate. A fool proof way to determine your tank’s capacity would be to have it measured (in feet). Length X Width X (operational) Height X 7.5 is the formula that will provide a gallon capacity for your system.

There are many factors that play into the lifespan of a septic system, like maintenance and where the system is installed. Generally, a properly constructed tank will last around 50 years. The disposal (leach) fields however will generally last around 25-30 years.

The most important thing you can do for the longevity of your septic system is to have it pumped regularly. You should have your tank pumped every 3-5 years or more depending on your sewer usage circumstances.

Some other helpful tips for keeping your system healthy are to; only flush waste and toilet paper (nothing else), avoid excessive water usage, avoid putting chemicals into your system and don’t park on or build on any part of your septic system.

There is little evidence that supports that septic additives are beneficial to the overall function of your system. If you do use additives, check with your local and federal regulatory agencies to ensure the additives you’re planning to use are legal and safe. Furthermore, use them sparingly – excessive additive use can cause issues with your system.

Sometimes a backup in your septic system can be caused by a blockage in the sewer line or inside the tank. However, if you are experiencing regular sewer backups, it’s possible that there is a problem with your tank or disposal (leach) fields. If you ever have a sewer backup – call a professional plumbing company (like ours) to restore the flow and evaluate the cause.

Most septic tanks are installed about 15-25 feet from your home. They will generally be installed at a low elevation on your property near a field or open area. Disposal/leach lines are generally installed in long runs – areas that can accommodate multiple 25’-100’ lengths of piping. Look around your home for an area that fits that description. If you aren’t having any luck, contact a professional plumbing company (like ours) who has video and location equipment.

Many people feel that they should inspect their tank or work on it themselves. Working in or around a septic tank can be extremely dangerous. We recommend having a skilled professional do any maintenance on your system that involves opening the tank.
